The distinctiveness of compulsive hoarding from obsessive-compulsive disorder [An article from: Journal of Anxiety Disorders] Review

The distinctiveness of compulsive hoarding from obsessive-compulsive disorder [An article from: Journal of Anxiety Disorders] Overview

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Anxiety Disorders, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The present study investigated the relation of compulsive hoarding to other obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in a sample of 162 patients with OCD. Obsessions and compulsions reported on the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-IV were submitted to an exploratory factor analysis. Results suggested a four-factor model: ''Certainty,'' ''Contamination,'' ''Obsessions,'' and ''Numbers/Ordering.'' Hoarding did not load on any factor. The sample was divided into three groups: pure hoarding, nonhoarding OCD, and mixed OCD and hoarding. The hoarding group endorsed significantly less anxiety, worry, stress, and negative affect on self-report measures than the mixed and nonhoarding groups. Although hoarding sometimes functions as a compulsion among individuals with OCD, hoarding in the absence of other OCD symptoms may be a clinically distinct syndrome.

Check Out Programming C# 3.0 for $39.99

Programming C# 3.0 Review

Programming C# 3.0 Overview

Written by popular author and .NET expert Jesse Liberty, this thoroughly updated tutorial for beginning to intermediate programmers covers the latest release of Microsoft's popular C# language (C# 3.0) and the newest .NET platform for developing Windows and web applications.

Our bestselling Programming C# 3.0, now in its fifth edition, is a world-class tutorial that goes well beyond the documentation otherwise available. Liberty doesn't just teach C#; he tells the complete story of the C# language and how it integrates with all of .NET programming, so that you can get started creating professional quality web and Windows applications.

This book:
  • Provides a comprehensive tutorial in C# and .NET programming that also serves as a useful reference you'll want by your side while you're working
  • Covers all of the new features of the language, thoroughly integrated into every chapter, rather than tacked on at the end
  • Provides insight into best practices and insight into real world programming by a professional programmer who worked with C# as an independent contractor for nearly a decade before joining Microsoft as a Senior Program Manager
  • Every chapter in this book has been totally revised, and the entire book has been reorganized to respond to the significant changes in the language
  • Full coverage, from the ground up of LINQ (Language Integrated Query) and other C# 3.0 language innovations to speed up development tasks
  • Explains how to use C# in creating Web Applications as well as Windows Applications, using both the new Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and the older WinForms technology
This new edition of Programming C# 3.0 is for working programmers who want to develop proficiency in Microsoft's most important language. No prior .NET experience is required for you to get started. There's no time like the present to work with C# -- and no book like this one to teach you everything you need to know.

Special note to VB6 and Java programmers: if you've decided to transition to .NET, this book will take you there.

International trade and child labor.: An article from: Journal of Economic Issues Review

International trade and child labor.: An article from: Journal of Economic Issues Overview

This digital document is an article from Journal of Economic Issues, published by Association for Evolutionary Economics on June 1, 1995. The length of the article is 3047 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

From the supplier: Developed countries are trying to eliminate the problem of child labor by imposing trade sanctions on countries which employ children as workers. While poverty is acknowledged as the main cause of child labor, there are many social factors behind this practice. The rationale for the efforts to eliminate child labor are described as questionable. Laws to prohibit child labor may only serve to exacerbate the economic problems of developing countries. It was suggested that the problem of child labor may be solved through a mixture of economic, technological, social and legal processes.

How Venture Capital Works Review

How Venture Capital Works Overview

In this article, Bob Zider, president of the Beta Group, a California-based firm that invests in commercializing new technologies, presents an analysis of present-day venture capitalists and shows why its practitioners have a lot more in common with investment bankers than you might think. The popular mythology surrounding the U.S. venture-capital industry derives from a previous era. Venture capitalists who nurtured the computer industry in its infancy were legendary both for their risk taking and for their hands-on operating experience. But today things are different, and separating the myths from the realities is crucial to understanding this important piece of the U.S. economy. Today's venture capitalists are more like conservative bankers than the risk takers of days past. They have carved out a specialized niche in the capital markets, filling a void that other institutions cannot serve. They are the linchpins in an efficient system for meeting the needs of institutional investors looking for high returns, of entrepreneurs seeking funding, and of investment bankers looking for companies to sell. Venture capitalists must earn a consistently superior return on investments in inherently risky businesses. The myth is that they do so by investing in good ideas and good plans. In reality, they invest in good industries--that is, industries that are more competitively forgiving than the market as a whole. And they structure their deals in a way that minimizes their risk and maximizes their returns. Although many entrepreneurs expect venture capitalists to provide them with sage guidance as well as capital, that expectation is unrealistic. Given a typical portfolio of 10 companies and a 2,000-hour work year, a venture capital partner spends on average less than 2 hours per week on any given company. In addition to analyzing the current venture-capital system, the author offers practical advice to entrepreneurs thinking about venture funding.

Work 2.2 - Manage Your Manager -- a RADICAL SIMPLICITY e-Doc Overview

Bill Jensen believes that managing your boss is important. "I'm not saying your manager deserves your tears or sympathy," Jensen writes -- but, he adds, with new workplace realities, it is important to have a simple, works-well relationship with your manager. Jensen is the author of Simplicity and Work 2.0. In this document, he talks about the four key things anyone can do to boost their success in developing a positive working relationship with a supervisor. "Many of our biggest day-to-day problems come down to an inability to connect with each other," he says, also advising that it would be most unwise to let that happen with the person you report to. Check Out The Autonomic Nervous System: Webster's Timeline History, 1868 - 2007 for $28.95

The Autonomic Nervous System: Webster's Timeline History, 1868 - 2007 Review

The Autonomic Nervous System: Webster's Timeline History, 1868 - 2007 Overview

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "The Autonomic Nervous System," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have The Autonomic Nervous System in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with The Autonomic Nervous System when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name The Autonomic Nervous System, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

Check Out Scrapbook: Webster's Timeline History, 1600-1760 - 2007 for $28.95

Scrapbook: Webster's Timeline History, 1600-1760 - 2007 Review

Scrapbook: Webster's Timeline History, 1600-1760 - 2007 Overview

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Scrapbook," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Scrapbook in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Scrapbook when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Scrapbook, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

Check Out Harnessing the Science of Persuasion (HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition) for $6.50

Harnessing the Science of Persuasion (HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition) Review

Harnessing the Science of Persuasion (HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition) Overview

This is an enhanced edition of the HBR reprint R0109D, originally published in September 2001. HBR OnPoint articles save you time by enhancing an original Harvard Business Review article with an overview that draws out the main points and an annotated bibliography that points you to related resources. This enables you to scan, absorb, and share the management insights with others. If leadership, at its most basic, consists of getting things done through others, then persuasion is one of the leader's essential tools. Over the past several decades, experimental psychologists have learned which methods reliably lead people to concede, comply, or change. Their research shows that persuasion is governed by several principles that can be taught and applied. The first principle is that people are more likely to follow someone who is similar to them than someone who is not. Second, people are more willing to cooperate with those who are not only like them but who like them, as well. Third, experiments confirm the intuitive truth that people tend to treat you the way you treat them. Fourth, individuals are more likely to keep promises they make voluntarily and explicitly. Fifth, studies show that people really do defer to experts. Finally, people want more of a commodity when it's scarce; it follows, then, that exclusive information is more persuasive than widely available data.

Examination of grounded theory analysis with an application to hospitality research [An article from: International Journal of Hospitality Management] Review

Examination of grounded theory analysis with an application to hospitality research [An article from: International Journal of Hospitality Management] Overview

This digital document is a journal article from International Journal of Hospitality Management, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The focus on qualitative research has unfortunately been mainly confined to methods of data collection, neglecting a more significant aspect, namely data analysis. Hospitality and tourism research is no exception to this observation. This is considered to be one of the main reasons why there has been a lower output of qualitative research in hospitality and tourism. In order to elevate the status of and, consequently, use of qualitative research more attention should be shown towards the issue of data analysis. Consequently, the current work aims to make a modest contribution in this direction by thoroughly examining one specific analytic strategy-that of grounded theory-with an application of it to a hospitality study.
